How To Receive Certification By The American Association Of Medical Assistants

The American Association of Medical Assistants offers the CMA credential to individuals meeting their requirements for the highest set of skills and knowledge for medical assistants.  To receive these credentials, the candidate must complete a program accredited by the CAAHEP or the ABHES.

When enrolled in these programs, candidates receive clinical training in many areas.  Members of the AAMA receive several benefits including a professional edge, higher pay, career advancement, jog security, networking and self satisfaction.



Once students graduate from the programs, they must pass a certification exam.  To register for the exam, the individual must list themselves as recent graduates, non-recent graduates or recertificant.  Recent graduates receive a price break on the exam cost, of a 50% discount.

In order to receive scores on the exam, recent graduates must verify program and practicum completion from the program directors.  Non-recent graduates msut supply an official score.  Reapplicants must provide their CMA certificate number.

Tests are administered at the Prometric testing centers all during the year.  Once candidates apply for the testing period start date and are accepted, they have 90 days to complete the exam.  Candidates will find application dates through the AAMA website.

The computerized exam consists of 200 multiple choice questions.  Subject matter ranges from medical terminology to anatomy, professionalism and communication.  The AAMA offers the complete list.  There are four 40-minute segments on the exam.  Candidates are offered an optional 20 minute break between segments and have 160 minutes total to answer all questions to the best of their ability.

Please note the following information concerning the CMA credential.

Exams cannot be completed more than 30 days before completing formal education and practicum.

Individuals with a felony record must request and receive a waiver form to take the exam.

Credentials must be maintained by renewing every 5 years.

Renewal involves keeping up to date on newest developments in the health care field.

Members of the AAMA must participate in continuing education, read text and build networks of health care professionals.
