Nurses must have at least an associate’s degree to become a registered nurse. Some students finish their education at this point while others go onto to a four-year degree. After they finish the four-year degree they may decide to go onto get a master’s degree. They may even decide to become a full-blown doctor or a physician’s assistant. Both programs require more than just a college degree. The programs are different. A person with a nursing degree may ask if a nursing degree will prepare her for medical school.
Will a nursing major fully prepare a student for entrance into a medical school?
Pre-medical programs focus on biology as do nursing programs. They focus on human biology specifically. Although the programs are similar, they are not the same. The things potential doctors must learn are not the same things that perspective nurses must learn. Doctors and Physician’s assistants must learn how to diagnose and treat illnesses. Nurses must learn to diagnose and support. The nurse’s job differs from the doctor’s job greatly, even though nurses and doctors work closely together.
Nursing degrees are not designed to help someone prepare for medical school, although there will be some overlap between the two areas. Human anatomy does not change because people have different professions, but the fields of knowledge each profession needs is different. Nurses can make the transition necessary to become a medical doctor, but they do not normally do so. Most who choose to continue their education receive physician’s assistant training.
