Registered nurses need to go through at least two years of training before they begin to practice medicine. Each individual who goes into this field must pass a standardized exam before she is allowed to work in a hospital or a doctor's office. Books can help a person pass this test, but the most important registered nursing books deal with the exam that all people who wish to become a registered nurse must take. The test, called the NCLEX, determines whether or not a student gets her license after she finishes her education.
The NCLEX can be compared to a nursing SAT, but the score itself does not matter much. Unlike the ASVAB test used by the military, hospitals usually only care whether a perspective nurse employee passes. If the nurse failed, she probably is trying to find a different career or employment elsewhere in the medical field (read also: nurse career opportunities in USA). If she passes the exam, she can get a job almost anywhere. She still needs to go through the interview itself.
The best nursing books help a person study for the NCLEX exam. When she finishes the finals for all of her classes, she will sit through this test. Her career hinges on whether or not she passes or fails. If she fails, she can take the test again, but she wants to spend more time studying. With the proper preparation, a student can do well on this test. No one should expect it to be easy. It will be just as grueling as the SATs.
