Medical assistants do not need a certification to practice their trade. Even though these dedicated professionals do not need a certificate, they benefit from having one as much as ASE Automotive specialists do from having one. Many of the schools that offer these programs prepare their students to earn a certificate before they are unleashed upon unsuspecting patients. The certification does not make someone competent in the field. It only proves that he can pass the test. Even though a certification only proves that someone can pass a test, there are benefits to having one.
The most obvious benefit to having a medical assistant certificate is that it makes getting a job much easier. Doctors offices and hospitals want to know that the nurses, phlebotomists (read also what is phlebotomist?), and technicians have the correct level of knowledge before they hire anyone. They also like to know that the people have the same level of skill.
Medical assistants often do not deal with patients directly. They usually take patient information and make sure patients go into the right room for their appointments. These professionals are often office staff rather than the people who perform the tests. They need to know about codes and how to bill the insurance companies, but the most important thing is that they be able to deal with people. The medical assistant does not need to have a good bedside manner, but they cannot display the people skills of the Grinch who Stole Christmas, either.
Certificates do not automatically land someone a job. A person working in a technical field often goes by the rule that a certification equals one year of experience in the field. As with the technical certifications, there is no board that officially licenses the people who work in the offices. This is certainly not true for doctors and nurses, but the lack of an official certification board may change in the future.
